CVV2 and Credit Card Security

The CVV2 number is used to indicate that the card is present at the time of payment. This important new security feature for online and other card-not-present transactions now appears on recently issued Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards.

The new CVV2 feature, is a three or four-digit number that provides a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card. The CVV2 number helps to protect the credit card holder from fraud.

Where do I find the CVV2 number?

On Visa, Mastercard, and Discover

A CVV2 three-digit number is printed on the signature panel on the back of the credit card immediately following the card account number.

On American Express

The CVV2 four-digit number is printed on the front of American Express credit cards above and to the right of the card account number.
