The CVV2 number is used to indicate that the card is present at the time of payment. This important new security feature for online and other card-not-present transactions now appears on recently issued Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards.
The new CVV2 feature, is a three or four-digit number that provides a cryptographic check of the information embossed on the card. The CVV2 number helps to protect the credit card holder from fraud.

A CVV2 three-digit number is printed on the signature panel on the back of the credit card immediately following the card account number. |

The CVV2 four-digit number is printed on the front of American Express credit cards above and to the right of the card account number. |
